Let's Beat Stress with Potatoes

People nowadays encounter stress easily from any circumstances, probably due to low capability in emotion management, in which believed to be partly contributed by today's urban era of globalization. Quick fix to distress would be workout/exercise, listening to music, get a listener or eating.

I'd recently found out that eating can really beat up stress within oneself, of course, eat appropriately with potato, containing highest amount of potassium (620 milligrams for about 148 grams of potato) as compared to broccoli, banana and tomato.

A brief about potassium, it is a chemical element in our body that leads to serotonin regulation. Serotonin helps in regulating anxiety, happiness and mood. There are people, particularly those with hypertension always seeks for oral medicine (supplement) to support, but potatoes are indeed the best natural source of potassium. Those from supplement is unnatural, after all.

Another significant concern would be carbohydrate, cared the most by the ladies. Truth is, a medium sized skin-on potato, weighs around 148 grams contains only 26 grams of carbohydrate. Carbohydrate is a key source of energy for muscle, workout maniac should have known that carbohydrate intake is also essential over the optimal physical and mental performance.

One more thing, it's only about 110 calories for each 148g (5.2 oz) potato.

The sharing above is what I'd been exposed from a workshop "Healthy Delicious Dishes with US Potatoes" organised by Potatoes USA - Malaysia last weekend.

Grateful to have Miss An Jo, a practising dietitian for an interesting sharing session
about the benefits of eating potato.

During the workshop, Chef Audee Cheah was there to demonstrate live on simple cooking of delicious and healthy dishes with potatoes. Just off the topic, he is currently the President of Penang Chef Association with over than 28 years of culinary experiences in European, Chinese, Malay, Nyonya, Thai and Asian delicacies.

Nice posture, chef, 霸气十足!

Chef Audee used U.S. fresh potatoes and U.S frozen potatoes to cook four different dishes, even suitable for beginners over an attempt of hands-on experience, I suppose.

Friendly reminder from Chef Audee about the usage of either plastic or wooden spatula on a stainless steel pan. He's holiding a plastic one that withstand up to 300 degree celsius.

Russet potatoes were used for two main dishes, namely U.S Potato and Prawn Kerabu and Curry Chicken Stuffed U.S Potatoes.
U.S Potato and Prawn Kerabu
Malaysian unique fusion dishes infused with the local's favourite of Kerabu,
making it a healthy and delicious starter.

Curry Chicken Stuffed U.S Potatoes
Potato were cut half and as a cup to contain the curry chicken.
Just a few bites and you have got all the curry chicken inside your molar

For the frozen potatoes, Chef Audee gonna prove you to a big wrong if you thought about solely deep fried. Same as previous, there are two different dishes with frozen U.S potatoes. Suitable for all ages over a high tea or even cocktail session. I bet the kids would also love to eat more on each serving consists of balanced nutrient.

Kimchi Seaweed U.S. Lattice Cut Fries
Isn't it a great choice paired with some cider over a weekend getaway?

Chilli Flavoured U.S Potato Wedges in Lettuce Cups
Because cupcake is too mainstream, we go for healthier and yummier one!

Worries no more if you are blank to prepare healthy dishes with potatoes. Have a try in kitchen and you might be surprised over the great taste!

Well, after this sharing, I'm doubting about myself in cheering people, or simply manage to help beating one's stress, because I always regard myself as potato? LOL joke, man. Hope you enjoy and gain some knowledge from this sharing. Think potassium, think potatoes!

7 Highlights: Japanese Buffet Dinner 🍴 SPOON, G Hotel Kelawai

With the wide acceptance of foreign cuisine by the community, it has becoming one of the common choices to select for a meal. For instance, Korean cuisine, especially, is flooded with buffet style BBQ promotion from time to time. Just my two-cents, Japanese cuisine buffet is mostly served in hotel with a relatively lower publicity and not to mention, the not-so strategic dining location to the locals especially.

Here to present 7 highlights that I found in Japanese themed buffet that is simply convincing toward your dine-in moment spent at Spoon Cafe (G Hotel Kelawai, Level 2).

1. Elimination of Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) and Alcohol
In the practice of healthy diet concept, there is no any flavour enhancers (commonly known as MSG) added in the food preparation. It's purely the art work of Executive Sous Chef, Ong Ban Khoon and the team to bring out the real taste of food that is compatible to the authentic Japanese cuisine. Another highlight goes to the absence of alcohol used in making out a Muslim-friendly dining hall. This is definitely a great space for diners including the Muslims to enjoy Japanese food with a peace of mind.

Allow Sake No To-nyu Jiru (Creamy salmon miso soup) as the entree before the main dish.

Get some finger food, kids must be like it very much.

What about the traditional Japanese appetizer?
Don't forget to grab the smooth and creamy Chawanmushi (steamed egg custard) as well.

2. Assorted Sushi
As sushi is a staple of Japanese cuisine, it is a must to pick up at least one or two for a refreshing savore too. They are freshly prepared and replenished from time to time to ensure your continuous satisfaction in terms of great taste and freshness.

Sushi fans, get it all you can!

Nicely presented tako (octopus).

Hira-zukuri cuts (rectangular slice) of salmon sashimi.

3. Seafood Galore
Here's some abundant source of minerals to keep you in good reproductive health. Treasure of the sea are freshly lay for your pick and also cold cuts, too.

Eat them fresh.

You could also opt for salad for the sake of balanced diet.

4. Marvellous Cheese Corner
If you were a Japanese food mania, you must've known that Japanese are really brilliant in innovate and infuse cheese (beside matcha) into food and beverage (despite it's diary production by the westerns). At Spoon Cafe, you have the opportunity of unlimited tasting more than simply biting into it.

Gouda Cheese.

Edam Cheese.

Brie Cheese.

Emmental Cheese.
(My top pick!)

5. Mouth-watering Dessert
This is normally served at the end as a completion of your meal yet ironically, it's the climax to the sweet-tooths and ladies, especially. G Hotel's in-house dessert has always been a great anticipation over its variety and most importantly, the wonderful taste to fly you high! (Stop screaming, girls! XD)

Creative art piece including selected pastries and confectioneries.

Chocolate fountain with assorted fruits and tidbits.

Glutinous ball with sesame fillings in thick red bean soup (Zenzai soup).

Spot your favourite pick?
Some features include purin, green tea red bean mousse, Hokkaido cup cake and Japanese cheese cake.

6. Strategic location between shopping malls and comfortable dining space
It's no longer a big issue to you as Spoon Cafe at G Hotel Kelawai is strategically situated between Gurney Plaza and Gurney Paragon Mall. Just a minute or two of walking distance, you've already stepped into either one of the one-stops to do grocery shopping after that or get into limited sales or even a lovely movie date.

Being a old-school people, I was pleasant to step into the dining space floored with Peranakan-inspired cement tile.

Extensive simple interior including wooden dining tables and chairs, not to forget, aesthetic circus pendant lights leads to the sophisticated ambience.

Moreover, the overlooking of Kelawai road that is always lively with relentless traffic flow adds up some captivating scene to stimulate your appetite too. Simply perfect for a casual dinner with your loved ones or even a corporate engagement.

7. G Signature drinks
Despite complimentary free flow of sky juice, you may opt something special to spark thru your beverage. Introducing some in-house signature drinks to skyrocket your food enjoyment at Spoon Cafe.

From left to right of three cocktails:
Pomegranate Mojito
Lychee Smash
Cili Lada
(Each RM 38)

I chose Watermelon Pudina (RM 21) which is under mocktails category.
Every refreshing sip is smoothly infused by the blended fresh mint leaves.

And of course, there're more for you discover besides these highlights as mentioned. Others include Action Station where the chef skillfully showcase you via all the Teriyaki food. Ice cream and fruits are another great choices to bottom up your satisfaction.

The Taste of Childhood ✌️ ✌️ Granny's Cottage 外婆家 Gurney Plaza

If you ever listened about my sharing of childhood memories then you might know that I was mostly raised up by my grandma for about six years of elementary school time. Having working parents isn't preferable, personally, but somehow I'm grateful over it. Proud to say that I'm the only one among the grandchildren who got to taste the most frequent and variety on my grandma's cooking. Let me name some like claypot chicken rice, asam pedas, herbal soup, sambal petai, ikan cencaru with sambal, sweet and sour fish fillet, grandma's style breakfast set....All of them are simply YUM!!! (Ahh..sense of nostalgia once again)

As the modern food concept has been flourishing to the society now, for example, cheese tart, cheese drinks and 安慕希 Greek yogurt drinks. People tend to be on the track of continuous trying on new food (thru the words of mouth and so called 'trend') and somewhat, gradually forgetting on the taste of old good times from the food.

Here to highlight Granny's Cottage (non-halal restaurant) to you because...

  • Strategic location ( A shop lot at a one-stop shopping mall )
  • Opportunity to the taste of simple cooking ( Important for workaholics especially )
  • Compatibly reasonable price as in the mall
Let me share with you what my family and I had earlier last weekend at the restaurant.

Special Sambal Petai with Prawns 家传叁巴臭豆虾仁 (RM 18.90)

Without hesitation, my mum and I mutually selected this when we were about to place our order.

My mum nodded her head right after her first taste on it.
That's pretty much a good sign that it has passed her standard, I suppose.

It tend to spike to sweetness which is too my own liking. Plus, it's less spicy. I guess it would be fine for the kids too.

Stir Fried Potato Leaves with Garlic 清炒番薯叶 (RM 8.90)

That's my family favourite, especially my dad.

All of us agree that the tender leaves of vegetables is the greatest key on this dish. Not too oily, too. Thumbs up for the chef as he/she manages to cook like how a real home-cooked dish should be. Simple yet healthy.

Winter Melon with Pork Ribs 冬瓜排骨汤 (RM 7.90)

It's common a practice in most of the families to have soup during dining hour. We have this winter melon soup which my grandma used to cook this frequently, too!

The serving is up to 2-3 pax, if you are not those 灌汤 diners 😂
Taste simply clean and sweet, wonderfully contributed by the sweetness of the pork and Gozi berry.

Nestum Prawn 麦片虾 (RM 21.90)

Average size prawn, simply nice and perfect.

We were slightly turned down over the oiliness of the prawn. We think that it's gone a little over that is greasy and unhealthy to dine. Other concerns are fine to us, fragrance of the Nestum hit it right as it unleashed to our nostril upon servings.

Soya Milk with Peanut (Served warm)  豆奶花生(热)(RM 4.60)

We decided to try out this as a completion of our satisfying meal
Not too sweet and quite refreshing to consume, simply perfect to warm your stomach in the recent weather.

Here you go in case of you're keen to preview the menu before making a patronage to Granny's Cottage.

Selections of meat, chicken, seafood and egg
